Apple iWork MCP: what it is and how to get it

2026-10-27 · 4 min read

Apple iWork MCP is Model Context Protocol support coming to Keynote, Pages and Numbers, so outside AI agents and tools can read your documents, edit them and run automated actions inside the apps. It needs macOS 27 or later and arrives in November with an Apple Creator Studio update, alongside a beta assistant in each app that Apple built on its own models and OpenAI's.

Apple announced it on October 27, and Steve Moser of MacRumors was quick to spot the line in the press release. @SteveMoser opened with "Apple is supporting MCP in iWork!" and immediately wondered whether it would require a Creator Studio subscription. Further down the same thread he asked why these features use OpenAI models when Siri's new AI runs on Google's Gemini. Apple's announcement answers neither question.

What Apple announced

Apple's newsroom post covers three things for the iWork apps.

The first is an in-app assistant, in beta. Apple says it is "built on Apple models and OpenAI" and understands the document you have open. In Keynote it helps design, animate and refine slides. In Pages it drafts, restructures and tightens text. In Numbers it calculates, visualizes and organizes data, recommends chart types with a one-tap preview, and builds tables from general world knowledge. You need an Apple Intelligence-capable device on iOS 27, iPadOS 27 or macOS 27, and it only works in U.S. English. iPhone and iPad users have already seen some of this: MacRumors reported an "Intelligent Assistant" appearing in the iWork apps for Creator Studio subscribers on October 22.

The second is MCP. According to Apple, external AI agents and tools will be able to "read content, perform edits, and execute automated actions" in Keynote, Pages and Numbers. The assistant runs on phones and tablets too, but MCP requires macOS 27 or later.

The third is a new Keynote file format, .keyx. Apple calls it an open, JSON-based bundle format designed to be readable by external tools, and Moser's thread pitches it at developer workflows and AI agents. A deck stored as plain JSON is something a script or a model can generate and check without much trouble.

What it costs and who gets it

Item What Apple says
Keynote, Pages, Numbers Still free
Apple Creator Studio $12.99/month or $129/year (U.S.), one-month free trial
Education pricing $2.99/month or $29.99/year
Assistant Beta, Creator Studio, U.S. English, iOS/iPadOS/macOS 27
MCP macOS 27 or later
Ship date Free update for subscribers "this November"

The assistant is plainly a Creator Studio feature. Apple doesn't say whether MCP is free or paid, which is exactly what Moser asked. Treat it as unknown until Apple publishes setup docs.

How to try it before November

Apple's own MCP isn't out yet, but a community server lets you try the workflow now. iwork-mcp is an open project that drives Numbers, Pages and Keynote through macOS scripting (JavaScript for Automation) and lists 117 tools. From its README:

  • Claude Desktop: run npx iwork-mcp install
  • Claude Code: run claude mcp add iwork -- npx -y iwork-mcp
  • Requirements: macOS 13 or newer, current iWork apps, Node.js 18 or newer, and the macOS Automation permission the first time it runs

Its sample prompts make good tests for a small office. One reads "Build a monthly budget in Numbers with income, expenses, variance formulas, and a net savings row." Another asks for a six-slide Keynote review deck with presenter notes. It has to run on the Mac where iWork is installed, and it edits your real files, so work on copies.

Once Apple ships its version, I'd expect that to be the cleaner route, since the access comes from the apps themselves and not from scripting. We covered the same pattern in Framer MCP, and Claude Code MCP Tasks explains how the protocol handles longer jobs.

My read

What surprised me is that Apple went with MCP at all. It usually builds its own plumbing. Here it is opening its office apps to any agent that speaks the protocol, Claude and Cursor included, and adding a JSON file format that makes the job easier. For people who live in Keynote, I think that matters more than one more chat panel. OpenAI's approach is to build decks inside ChatGPT, which we looked at in ChatGPT Slides. Apple is betting you'd rather bring your agent of choice to the files you already have.

Several questions are still open. Nobody knows yet whether MCP sits behind the subscription, how permissions work for each document, or how much of each app an agent can reach. November should answer them.

What it means for a small business

If your quotes, proposals or monthly reports live in Pages and Numbers, an agent will soon be able to fill them in from your other systems so nobody has to copy and paste. A good first step is listing the documents you rebuild by hand every week. Our free process audit does that with you, so you'll know which ones are worth automating when Apple's version ships.
