Framer MCP: what it is and how to use it

2026-10-24 · 5 min read

Framer MCP is an official, hosted server that lets outside AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor and Grok Bot open your Framer project and build pages, edit copy and manage the CMS for you. To use it, you add the Framer connector to your AI tool, sign in to Framer, approve access, and paste a project link into the chat with what you want done.

Framer announced it on October 22. The launch post from @framer opens with "The Framer MCP is here," and says the point is to work in the AI tools you already use while keeping Framer's flexibility and control. It had close to 95,000 views when we checked. Co-founder @jornvandijk quoted it with "The @framer MCP is here and its amazing. Have fun!"

How Framer MCP works

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the plug standard that lets an AI assistant talk to another app. We covered the recent rebuild of the MCP spec and why it matters for connectors. Framer's version is a remote server at https://mcp.framer.com/mcp, so you don't install anything locally. It signs in with OAuth and uses your Framer account's permissions. That means the agent can reach any project your account can reach, which is worth thinking about before you connect it on a shared login.

Before this, Framer's route for outside agents was a local bridge called @framer/agent. Framer now calls MCP "the recommended way to connect AI agents." The old CLI sticks around for now because it still handles localization, which MCP can't do yet.

What it can do

According to Framer's MCP page and help docs, once you approve the connection your agent can work with:

  • The canvas: create pages, change layouts and sections
  • Components already in the project, so new pages match your styles
  • Copy, including headings and body text
  • CMS collections, from listing them to editing entries
  • Supported project settings and an SEO review

The part I like most is the publishing rule. Changes stay in the project, or on a branch, until you or the agent publishes them, and Framer says the agent publishes only when you explicitly ask. A bad guess by the model sits in a draft instead of on your live site. Framer doesn't need to be open while the agent works, either, so you can let it run and look at the canvas afterward.

How to set it up

Tool How to connect
Claude Find Framer in the Claude Directory, click Connect to Claude, sign in, approve
ChatGPT or Codex Install the Framer plugin from the ChatGPT Plugins directory, or run codex mcp add framer --url https://mcp.framer.com/mcp
Cursor Add from the Cursor Marketplace, or Customize, MCPs, New MCP Server: name framer, type Streamable HTTP, the URL above
Grok Bot Connected Apps, Framer, Add, then Allow
Anything else Any client that supports remote Streamable HTTP servers and OAuth, using the same URL

Framer also links setup guides for VS Code, Windsurf, Warp, Devin, Kiro and OpenCode. If you work in a company workspace, check with your admin first, because plugins or MCP connections may need approval.

Prompts to try first

Framer's own examples are a good starting point. Always include the full project link, not the project name, so the agent opens the right file:

  1. "List the CMS collections in this project: [project link]"
  2. "Update the homepage heading to 'Design and publish without handoff': [project link]"
  3. "Open this Framer project and create a responsive pricing page using its existing styles and components: [project link]"

Start with the read-only one. It shows you the connection works without changing anything. Then try one small edit, look at it on the canvas, and only after that hand it a whole page.

What it costs

Framer doesn't list a separate MCP price. Its page says your AI usage "follows that agent's plan or credits," so the tokens come out of your Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor subscription, and the site itself stays on whatever Framer plan you already pay for. Framer also has its own built-in agents inside the editor, which it advertises with "Start with agents for free." MCP is the option for people who would rather stay in the assistant they already use.

My read

More and more, the site builder is something your AI assistant runs for you. ChatGPT started building and hosting websites itself; Framer went the other way and opened its editor to every major assistant at once. For a small business on Framer, a new service page or a holiday-hours banner can now be one sentence in Claude instead of a ticket to whoever built the site.

The catch is the one every AI editor has: a model will happily produce a page that looks fine and says the wrong thing. Drafts and branches keep a broken layout off the live site, but they won't catch a wrong price or a claim your business can't back up. Someone still has to read the page before it ships.

If you're trying to work out which website and back-office chores an agent could take over safely, New Face Design's free process audit goes through your week with you and sorts the tasks worth handing off from the ones that need a person checking them.
