Is Gemini 4 Argon free? Who gets it and what it costs

2026-10-13 · 4 min read

No, Gemini 4 Argon is not free. Since October 13 it has been available in the Gemini app to paying Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers only, and the API has no free tier for it either.

Google announced it Tuesday morning. "Today, Gemini 4 Argon is officially rolling out," the company posted from @Google. A follow-up in the same thread said who gets it: AI Ultra and Pro subscribers in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search, Ultra subscribers alone in Antigravity, and developers and businesses through the Gemini API. Ars Technica's post from @arstechnica put it more bluntly: Argon is rolling out "but only if you pay."

We wrote about the model itself, and its independent test scores, when it launched to a small group of cyber defenders on September 30. That's in our first Gemini 4 Argon post. This post covers who can use it and what it costs.

Who can use Gemini 4 Argon right now

Here's the breakdown from Google's thread and its Gemini app announcement:

  • Free Gemini users: no access, and no date from Google.
  • Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month): no access.
  • Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month): yes, in the Gemini app and in AI Mode in Search.
  • Google AI Ultra: yes, in the Gemini app, AI Mode and Antigravity, Google's agentic coding tool.
  • Developers: yes, through the paid Gemini API in Google AI Studio and on Google's enterprise platform.

Paying doesn't mean you'll see it today, because Google is rolling it out in stages. Android Police said its own writer, a Pro subscriber, didn't have the model yet when the story went up. If you pay and it isn't there, update the app and check again over the next few days.

Free users just lost ground too

The paywall stings more because of the timing. 9to5Google, citing an updated Google support page, reported that free personal accounts were limited to Gemini Flash-Lite starting October 9 and lost Flash and Pro in the app. AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but loses Pro. AI Pro keeps all of them and gains Deep Think.

That leaves free users on Google's smallest model in the same week the biggest one arrived for paying customers.

What Gemini 4 Argon costs on the API

Google's Gemini API pricing page lists the model as gemini-4-argon, with no free tier. Prices per million tokens:

Through Nov. 30, 2026 From Dec. 1, 2026
Input $2.00 $4.00
Output (including thinking) $10.00 $20.00
Cached input $0.10 $0.20

Batch and Flex processing cost half the standard rate. The launch price is a promotion that ends in seven weeks, so if you build an Argon workflow this month and budget at today's rates, expect the bill to double in December.

What Google says is different

According to Google's announcement, Argon "answers questions more directly with less hedging," repeats itself less, leans less on stock phrases, and reports progress more often during long jobs. The Gemini app also gets a toggle to switch between chat and tasks, and connections to more than 40 apps, among them Instacart, OpenTable, Adobe and Shopify.

The same thread showed Argon writing its own simulation code to train a humanoid robot to play cornhole. I enjoyed it, though it tells you nothing about how the model handles a customer email.

My read

Putting a new flagship behind a paid plan isn't surprising, and $19.99 a month for Google's best model is fair. The part I'd notice is that Google cut back the free tier in the same week. Anyone who relies on Gemini for work is being pushed toward a subscription.

For a small business, the decision is easy. If someone on your team pastes customer emails into free Gemini, they're getting Flash-Lite answers now, and a Pro seat probably costs less than an hour of their time. The price to watch is the API one, which changes on December 1. The app subscription stays where it is.

What this means for businesses adopting AI

What you get from each AI vendor now changes from month to month. Free tiers get smaller and launch prices run out. The businesses that cope best treat the model as a setting in their workflows, so switching from Flash to Argon, or away from Google altogether, takes an afternoon rather than a rebuild.
