ChatGPT Try On: how to use it and what it can't tell you
2026-10-02 · 4 min read
ChatGPT Try On is a new button in ChatGPT's shopping results that shows a piece of clothing or an accessory on you, generated from a selfie or full-body photo you upload. It launched on October 1 for web and mobile, runs on OpenAI's ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, and works on screenshots of products from other sites too, not only the ones ChatGPT suggests.
@TechCrunch broke it down on X Thursday: OpenAI is adding ways to "virtually try on clothing and accessories using their own photos," along with a Favorites library for saving products. A few hours earlier, @testingcatalog, the account that digs through app code for unreleased features, posted that a Wallet marked "Coming Soon" had appeared inside the ChatGPT app. Put the two side by side and it's pretty clear OpenAI wants ChatGPT to be somewhere people shop.
How to use ChatGPT Try On
Based on OpenAI's release note and early coverage from Android Authority and TechCrunch:
- Ask ChatGPT for clothing or accessories. A "Try on" button shows up next to listings that support it.
- The first time you tap it, you take a selfie or pick one from your gallery, and you're asked for a full-body photo as well.
- ChatGPT Images generates a picture of you wearing the item. Your reference photo is saved so you don't upload it again for the next product.
- If you found something elsewhere, paste a link or upload a screenshot and ask ChatGPT to try it on you.
- Tap Favorites to save a product to your Library, and use folders to sort what you've saved.
To delete the saved photo, go to Settings, then Personalization, then Reference photos. Coverage of the launch says that removing the photo there doesn't remove the chats or the images it already generated, so clean those up separately if that matters to you. Engadget also points out that images uploaded from personal accounts can be used for model training by default unless you've turned that setting off.
What it can't tell you
The biggest limit is fit, and OpenAI says so itself. Its help text warns that try-on images "may not represent the product or user appearance exactly" and don't guarantee size. The picture is the model's guess at how a jacket drapes on a body it has only seen in one photo. It can't measure you and it can't read a size chart. OpenAI's own advice is to check the merchant's measurements and return policy before you buy.
I'd use it to check whether a color or a cut suits you and leave the sizing to the size chart.
My read: OpenAI wants the part before checkout
Google has had virtual try-on in Search since 2025, so the feature itself isn't new. The placement is the interesting part.
TechCrunch notes that OpenAI already dropped an earlier Instant Checkout effort that didn't pan out. This time it's going after the moment before anyone pays: browsing, picturing it on yourself, saving it for later. Ads in ChatGPT are spreading to more countries (we covered the Angi deal here). Now there's a try-on button and a saved-products library, and if TestingCatalog's find is real, a wallet is coming. OpenAI hasn't announced the Wallet, so for now it's only a screen inside the app. Still, you can see the pieces of a full shopping trip being built inside a chat window.
What this means for shops that sell online
If you run a boutique, a bridal shop, or any store with products online, a growing share of shoppers will see your items inside ChatGPT before they ever reach your site.
Start with your product photos, since they're likely what the try-on image is built from. A clean, well-lit shot on a plain background gives the model more to work with than a busy lifestyle photo.
Favorites also stretch out the path to purchase. Someone might save your dress Thursday and buy it next week from a Google search, so ChatGPT never shows up as the referrer. Watch for chatgpt.com in your analytics, but expect it to undercount.
And keep your product data consistent. If the price or sizes on your site differ from your feeds and listings, an AI assistant will happily repeat the wrong one.
This isn't a big project. Most of it is tidy product data and knowing where your traffic really comes from. If you want a second pair of eyes on that, New Face Design runs a free process audit for Fox Valley businesses, and we'll tell you plainly which of these changes are worth your time.
