ChatGPT Intelligent UI: what it is and how to use it
2026-10-08 · 4 min read
ChatGPT Intelligent UI lets GPT-6 answer with a chart, a map, a form, tappable buttons or a small working calculator instead of a wall of text, depending on what you asked. It's free: paid plans started getting it on October 7, and Free and Go users get it on October 8.
OpenAI announced it in a post from @OpenAI on Wednesday: "GPT-6 and Intelligent UI, now rolling out in ChatGPT for everyone." The post passed four million views within a day. OpenAI president @gdb described it as a way of "answering quickly with fully interactive user interfaces," and attached a demo.
What Intelligent UI does
According to OpenAI's announcement, GPT-6 now picks the shape of an answer along with the words. A comparison can come back side by side, a road trip as stops on a map, a recipe with a cooking timeline next to it. An explanation might include a slider or input box you can change to see what happens.
The examples OpenAI leans on most are small tools, like a savings calculator or a bill splitter, that ChatGPT builds on the spot inside the chat. Plain questions still get plain answers, so asking for a store's hours shouldn't hand you a dashboard.
OpenAI says the pieces are native components that stream in as the model writes, so the interface fills in gradually on web and mobile. The company also admits the model's design sense and range still need work. Take that seriously if you expect polished output every time.
Who gets it and which model runs it
Paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise) get it through GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go users get it through GPT-6 Luna, the lighter model we covered when the GPT-6 family launched. It lives in the Chat tab only. OpenAI says the models behind Work and Codex haven't changed, and Enterprise access depends on what the workspace admin allows.
OpenAI's announcement doesn't say whether Intelligent UI is coming to the API, so for now this is a ChatGPT feature, not something a developer can put on your website.
How to use ChatGPT Intelligent UI
There is nothing to install. Open ChatGPT, stay in the Chat tab, and ask the kind of question that benefits from a visual. Prompts like these should bring it out:
- "Compare these three quotes side by side" with the numbers pasted in.
- "Build me a calculator for what a 10% price increase does to monthly revenue."
- "Map a route for these five job sites starting in St. Charles."
- "Show me how a 15-year and 30-year mortgage differ, with a slider for the rate."
If you get plain text, say what you want ("make that a table," "give me a calculator"). If it isn't showing up at all, the rollout may not have reached your account yet.
The skeptics have a point
Not everyone was impressed. A reply from @pigeon__s said this "has to be at least the 5th time OpenAI has released this same feature." The jab partly lands. ChatGPT has had Canvas, and OpenAI's Apps SDK already lets outside companies show their own interfaces inside a chat.
What's new is who builds the interface. With apps, a developer designed it ahead of time. Here the model makes one up for each question, which is more flexible and less predictable: a bill splitter ChatGPT wrote a few seconds ago hasn't been tested by anyone.
My read: for non-technical people this is the most useful ChatGPT change in a while. Most business questions come down to numbers and comparisons, and a table beats three paragraphs. Still, check a generated calculator's math once before you base a price on it.
What it means for your business
First, your customers will see more answers like this. Someone who asks ChatGPT to compare local options or estimate a job may get a tidy side-by-side table, and what you publish on your website is part of what it has to work with. Clear prices, service areas and hours matter more than they used to.
Second, owners get a fast way to make throwaway tools. A margin calculator or scheduling grid that used to eat an afternoon in a spreadsheet can now take one prompt. That's fine for thinking something through. Anything a customer or employee relies on every day still deserves a real, tested tool.
If you want to sort out which of your recurring tasks a quick AI tool can handle and which need a proper system, New Face Design's free process audit can help you draw that line.
