Canva Craft: what it is and how to use it
2026-10-22 · 4 min read
Canva Craft is Canva's first image generation model built in-house. It is trained on design templates instead of photos, so it is aimed at posters, menus, social posts and other layouts with real text in them. You use it from the Dream Lab tab inside Canva, and Canva says developers can reach it through its API.
What Canva posted
The launch came from the company account. @canva called Craft "our first frontier model built specifically for design" and said image generation with it is "now available to everyone." The same post claims that, on Design Arena's global leaderboard, Canva is now the second most advanced AI lab for image generation. It had close to 190,000 views within hours.
The ranking claim deserves a closer look. Thurrott reports that Craft entered Design Arena as the fourth-ranked image model, behind three OpenAI models: GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst, GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and GPT Image 2. Capital Brief calls the results preliminary. Rankings come from blind votes on images made from the same prompt, so the order can still move. Fourth place on a first try is a good result for a company best known for templates. OpenAI still holds the top three spots.
What Canva Craft does
According to TechCrunch, Craft works in two steps. It reads your prompt and plans the image first (where things sit, how big they are relative to each other, what the visual hierarchy is, what the text says). Then it draws the image. Canva is betting that planning first is what gets text and layout right, which is where image models usually struggle.
| Feature | Status |
|---|---|
| Images up to 2K resolution | Available now |
| About 30 aspect ratios for different platforms | Available now |
| Readable text and accurate object details | Canva's claim |
| Edit one part of an image without changing the rest | Canva's claim |
| Convert a Craft image into a layered, editable design | Available now, through Canva Magic |
| Canva API access for developers | Canva says it is live |
| Use from ChatGPT and Gemini through Canva's MCP | Planned, no date |
| Craftfast and Craft-ultrafast, cheaper versions | Coming "soon," no date |
For ordinary users, the layered-design conversion is the part to care about. Most AI images come out as flat pictures, so when the price or the date is wrong you start over. A Craft image that Canva turns into layers can be fixed in the editor like any other template.
How to try it
- Open Canva and go to the Dream Lab tab. TechCrunch says that is where Craft lives for all users.
- Pick the aspect ratio you need before you prompt: square for a feed post, tall for a story, wide for a banner.
- Write the prompt the way you'd brief a designer: put the exact words in quotes and say where they go.
- Check every word on the result. Spelling is where image models still slip.
- If the layout works but a detail is wrong, convert it to a layered design and edit it, rather than regenerating.
Here are two prompts that test the text handling:
- "Fall maintenance special flyer for an HVAC company. Headline: 'Furnace Tune-Up $89'. Smaller line: 'Book by Nov 15'. Clean, bold, navy and orange."
- "Lunch menu for a small Italian café, five items with prices, warm cream paper look, hand-lettered heading 'Pranzo'."
On access, the reports disagree. Canva's post and TechCrunch say everyone can use Craft, while Thurrott says the app requires a paid subscription. We couldn't find Craft-specific limits for free accounts, so check your plan before you build a routine around it.
Why Canva built its own
TechCrunch reports that Canva has relied on several third-party image models and expects Craft to cut its API costs and give it more control over quality and speed. Researchers from Leonardo.ai, which Canva bought in 2024, contributed to the model. Co-founder Cliff Obrecht told Capital Brief it shows "you don't need to be in Silicon Valley to build world-class AI."
Google's Nano Banana 2.1 already offers region editing at a low API price. Craft's edge is placement: it sits inside the editor where a lot of small businesses already make their flyers. Canva is also one of the connectors named for Anthropic's new agent app in Claude Duet, so once the MCP route opens, an agent could plausibly draft the weekly promo graphic and leave it for you to approve.
Our read
For a shop that posts specials, job photos or event flyers every week, Craft's text handling and layered output matter more than its leaderboard rank. If the text comes out right the first time and a wrong detail takes two clicks to fix, that weekly chore gets shorter. Test it on a real flyer first, and keep a person checking prices and dates before anything goes out.
